Pandolfi

Time for some winter music. Che gelida manina from La Bohème, Winter from The Four Seasons? Christmas Carols? I decided to plump for Pandolfi. A Sicilian who ended up at the court at Innsbruck in the mid 16-00s. I wonder what he made of the harsh winters there? Perhaps I am over-romanticising but I detect a feeling of longing in this music and a wild winter wind seems to blow through it.

Nothing much is known of him except for these violin sonatas which were not published in his lifetime. This one is called “La Cesta”

Violinist Andrew Manze (with harpsichordist Richard Egarr) on Harmonia Mundi HMU 90241.

02 Opus 3 (1660)
