It was never meant to last forever …
and it was actually hugely enjoyable scraping off the finished drawing, especially as I had managed to get some prints at the end.
There is an aspect of the anally-retentive about the print world so it is always fun to do something like this – printing on the run. I set up in a corner of Tim and Meena’s living room and got to work. Inking up the window was hard as the cold seemed to stiffen up the ink and inking something as large as a window is actually quite hard physical work.
During the drawing I realised that by using a scalpel on the emulsion I had ended up with a surface that I could take prints off – like a large, shallow woodcut. I decided against using black ink as I wanted an image that was about absence and residue. The prints would also be mirror images of the drawing. The window looked very dark when it was inked up but the prints came off silvery and ephemeral.
What was very interesting for me was that looking at the drawing from the street was such a different experience from looking at the street from behind the drawing.
